Kite-flying essentials and safety checklist
A short checklist to help you choose the right items, confirm local rules and plan a considerate place to fly.
Before you leave
- Kite: confirm its dimensions and variant; category names alone do not establish size or flying characteristics.
- Reel or charkhi: check that its size and contents suit the line and kite you plan to use.
- Thread: confirm its material and check current rules for the place where you will fly. Local orders may restrict synthetic, nylon, plastic or sharp-coated kite thread.
- Location: choose an open area away from traffic, power lines, crowds and other hazards. Follow local instructions and stop if conditions become unsafe.
- After flying: collect leftover line and packaging so they are not left where people or animals can encounter them.
Check local thread restrictions
Rules are not a substitute for confirming a product's materials. A National Green Tribunal order dated 11 July 2017 discusses restrictions concerning nylon or other synthetic kite thread and directs state and union-territory authorities to enforce prohibitions. Local and later orders may add detail or restrictions, so check current notices from your own state and district before buying or flying.
Read the government-hosted copy of the NGT order (PDF). This summary is general information, not legal advice.
Sources and limits
The cited order is dated 2017 and does not describe every current local rule. We do not make a blanket claim that any particular thread is legal in every location. Confirm the exact material and current local requirements before ordering.
